This project is going to lunch boat surveys in hot spots to understand their temporal variation on distribution and group structure, to monitor their movement patterns in diel, tidal and seasonal scale by acoustic data logger (A-tag), also to design an immediate underwater acoustic monitoring system in the marine protected area by reviewing literatures. There will be three parts of this project: (A) Observation of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins in hot spots, 30 boat surveys will be lunched with at least four observers in each survey. The image, group size, behavior state and environmental factors will be recorded once a group of dolphins is encountered. The Geographic Information System (GIS) will be used to analysis the track of dolphins and the habitat criteria; digital images will be used for photo-identification (photo-ID). (B) Monitoring the seasonal movement of dolphins by A-tag, the sound recording will be preceded at least four days in each season. The echolocation signals of dolphins recorded by Igor Pro 5.01 will be used to analyze the number of animals, the diel, tidal and seasonal differences will be analyzed as well. (C) A design of an immediate underwater acoustic monitoring system in the marine protected area, to provide the ecological information, the impact level of anthropogenic noise and to set up the monitoring devices and standard procedure of underwater noise by using the “ecological index” and “index of noise”. This project will provide scientific data on the abundance, distribution, habitat use, and population dynamics of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins off the west coast of Taiwan, also the suggestion of the immediate monitoring system plan in the marine protected area will be addressed, which can provide the conservation and management strategies for the authorities.
