As a psychoanalyst, Erikson has been interested in relating identity formation to developmental psychopathology. Following the original interest of Eriksonian theory, our previous series of studies have been devoted to differentiating the measuring concepts of identity (i.e., identity importance, identity firmness, identity discrepancy) and its contents (i.e., personal, social, image identity) (Chen, Lay, & Wu, in press; Chen, Lay, Wu, Yao, 2004), as well as investigating the relation between the three concepts of identity and mental health (Chen, Lay, & Wu, 2003; Chen et., 2004). To thoroughly understand the connection between identity and mental health during adolescence, our current NSC project (NSC 93-2413-H-002-011-) further examines the relation between self-identity and mental health among early and middle adolescents with internalizing and externalizing problems. Based on our previous findings, the goal of the proposed project is to develop a self-identity group intervention program, namely the “Adolescent Identity Intervention Program, AIIP” to help promote adolescent positive mental health. The participants of the AIIP will be recruited from one of the seven sampled schools in the current year’s NSC project. Adolescents with poor adjustment scores will be randomly assigned to the two experimental or the control group. Each group will consist of fifteen participants. Participants in the Experimental Group A will attend eight sessions of AIIP. Participants in the Experimental Group B will attend eight sessions of self-exploration group activities. Participants in the Control Group will be administered with all the pre- and post-tests at the same time as the Experimental Group A and B but without taking any form of intervention. This project hypothesizes that the therapeutic effect of the Experimental Group A will be better than that of the Experimental Group B and the Control Group. Moreover, it is also predicted that the AIIP not only has immediate therapeutic effect, but also has short-term (3-month follow-up) and long-term (6-month follow-up) carry-over therapeutic effects.
