Abstract: Most of the studies related to the health effects of environmental hormone focus on theobservations from the prenatal exposures. Based on public health perspectives, some otherliteratures assessed the human exposures from various environmental media and to observe thehealth effects of early childhood. Fundamental researches for the possible pathogenic mechanismswere elucidated from animal studies. However, there is only little information available consideringthe potential reproductive effects of environmental hormones. It is difficult to differentiate thehealth effects of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure from the many complex environmental hormoneexposures.Based on interdisciplinary cooperation, the objective of this integrated project is to assess thepotential health effects of BPA. Together with public health methodology, this study integratesclinical reproductive medicine and basic molecular biology to assess the hazards of BPA on humanhealth. The overall research frame follows the general principles of epidemiology and cross linkedto clinical medicine and basic molecular biology to verify the effect of maternal BPA exposure tothe health of the next generation. The overall goal of this study id to provide a complete view ofhuman BPA exposures, effects of BPA exposure to human health, assessment of pathogenicmechanism and integrated verification via clinical studies. The results of this study can be used as abasis for preparation of the policy of environmental hormone management to achieve thesustainable development of the nation. This sub-project assess the factors affect the BPA concentrations in drinking water and foodsand evaluate the human exposures to BPA through oral ingestion of drinking water and differentfoods. BPA data were collected from different projects which include data for river water, rawwater, treated water from water treatment plants and household tap water. Laboratory simulationstudies were also conduced to verify the potential BPA exposures through household waterconsumptions. In addition, cooperation with other sub-projects will be a key to provide otherexposure routes of BPA for total exposure assessment. The original proposal was a three-yearproject. The on-going second year project focuses on collecting the BPA data from various watersamples from river water, raw water, treated water and household tap water; so that the degradationprofiles of BPA in water environment and the potential BPA exposures through consumptions ofdrinking water can be assessed. In the meantime the possible exposures from other environmentalmedia (such as air) were also assessed by the other sub-projects. The data collected from differentsub-projects will be integrated to establish the total human exposures of BPA. Based on thisinformation, a health risk assessment can be conducted and managing strategy will be proposed formanagement of BPA. In addition to the water quality surveys, this study also collect exposureparameters for health risk assessment of trace pollutants in order to establish a methodology forBPA health risk assessment suitable for Taiwan. The execution of the second year project will alsocooperate with other sub-projects to integration the results of BPA environmental detections, biological monitoring, exposure assessment and health effects. In this way the value of the BPAhealth risk assessment results can be enhanced through the execution of this integrated project. This proposal applies for the third year project for implementation of the original three-yearproject. Based on results of the exposure assessment and risk assessment from first and secondyears, a BPA risk management strategies will be proposed. Through the execution of the secondyear (on-going) and the third year project, combined with the results of the other sub-projects, thisproject will enhance the practical and academic value of the health risk assessment andmanagement. The results of this project will be able to extend the outcomes of the projects conducted in pastyears. Combined with environmental detection, biological monitoring, health effects investigation, exposure assessment, risk assessment and management, this study will be able to propose a specificBPA risk management strategy for the government. In addition, a screening technique will be usedto assess the potential health effects from the many various emerging contaminants in theenvironment. A recommendation on the priority contaminants will be proposed for futuremanagement of emerging contaminants.
