Abstract
Drosophila albomicans and D. nasuta
show a little but not significant postmating
isolation. However, no hybrids have ever
been found in nature anywhere including
the area near the border, and they have
different karyotypes (2n=6 in D.
albomicans and 2n=8 in D. nasuta).
Therefore it’s interesting to know what
factors prevent gene flow between them.
They are good material to realize population
differentiation as well as speciation.
The experiments were designed to
investigate the premating isolation between
D. albomicans and D. nasuta. The
materials used in the experiments include
one D. nasuta and six D. albomicans stocks
from different geographic regions. Due to
the incomplete reproductive isolation
revealed by former experiments, we focused
on whether the D. albomicans and D.
nasuta have acquired premating isolation
mechanisms.
The result of our investigation revealed
that there exists primary premating isolation
between Thailand D. albomicans and India
D. nasuta, but the premating isolation
between India D. nasuta and D. albomicans
from other regions (Kang Tong, Taiwan,
Honshu Japan) is not significant.
