Abstract
By using a recently developed Eulerian program, the process toward three-dimensional separation is investigated through a numerical study of the laminar boundary layer over an impulsively started prolate spheroid. Details of the displacement-velocity distribution as well as the streamlines pattern near separation are examined and discussed. From the Langrangian viewpoint, separation shows up, physically, as an abrupt eruption of a certain fluid packet that becomes deformed into one with zero thickness in the streamwise direction.
