Title: | Novel proton exchange membranes for DMFC based on block polyelectrolytes with high degree of sulfonation | Authors: | CHI-YANG CHAO Lee, H.-C. |
Issue Date: | 2009 | Source: | ACS National Meeting Book of Abstracts | Abstract: | In this work, we report syntheses and characterizations of a novel block polyelectrolyte, poly(styrene-block-sulfonated hydroxystyrene) (PS-b-sPHS), and properties of proton exchange membranes made of. PS-b-sPHS with various molecular weights and compositions were synthesized via anionic polymerization with following analogous chemistry. Accurate control of molecular weight, narrow polydispersity and high degree of sulfonation were achieved. Transport properties and morphologies of proton exchange membranes prepared from PS-b-sPHS having different molecular weights, compositions and forms were investigated. These PEMs in general exhibited ionic exchange capacities comparable with Nafion117 and proton conductivities around 0.01-0.1 S/cm at room temperature. Methanol permeability of these membranes was significantly suppressed to an order of magnitude smaller than that of Nafion117. With proper preparation, these PEMs would have well-organized microphase separated structures leading to a much improved selectivity. In addition, water permeability of these membranes was higher than methanol permeability, which might be beneficial to water management of DMFC. |
