Abstract
In this study, sewage sludge was torrefied by using microwave heating. Both maximum temperature and average heating rate increased with increasing microwave power level. The higher heating value of the sewage sludge torrefied at 200 W was almost as twice as those torrefied at 350–400 W. Besides, mass and energy yields both decreased with increasing microwave power level. According to the high mass and energy yields and the high heating value of torrefied sewage sludge, the microwave power level of 200 W should be optimum for the production of bioenergy from sewage sludge. The mass yield of microwave heating was substantially lower than that of conventional heating, which should be attributable to the more intense reaction accomplished by microwave irradiation. The energy return on investment for microwave torrefaction of sewage sludge with the recovery of gaseous and liquid products can be up to 16.4, so the technique is energetically feasible for the production of bioenergy.
