Developing correlation relationships of Vs30 for use in site classification in Taiwan

Abstract
Effect of site conditions on ground motions was evident in past earthquakes. In seismic design of structures, the intensity level of design ground motion would differ for different site conditions. In most building codes, the averaged shear-wave velocity of the upper 30 meter of soil, Vs30, is often used as the key parameter in site classification. In this study, correlation relationships are established for Vs30 with potential proxies such as ground slope and terrain features. These Vs30 models are then used to develop site classification maps for Taiwan. The site classification maps from this study are found to be comparable to those that were previously published by other researchers, indicating that the proxies considered in this study can be used to estimate Vs30 when geophysical measurements of shear-wave velocity are not available.
