Bitter pattern study of flux pinning in melt-grown YBa2Cu3O7-x

Abstract
By employing the Bitter pattern technique, we studied both the static and dynamic vortex distributions which are either trapped via field-cooling or generated by a transport current in melt-grwon YBa2Cu3O7-x (the 123 compound). The patterns disagree with the speculation of pinning by Y2BaCuO5 (211) cores but indicate enhanced pinning wide-spread over the interstitial 123 areas confined within groups of neighboring 211 inclusions. A hierarchy in pinning ability, being higher as closer to the 211/ 123 interfaces, was found. The patterns are, in general, consistent with the presumption of enhanced pinning by defects in the vicinity of 211 inclusions. © 1994.
