Abstract
A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) usually consists of an automatic storage and retrieval system (AS/RS), a common-buffer, an automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system and several flexible manufacturing cells (FMCs). Due to the complexity and versatility of the FMS, the control of the FMS is a challenged problem. In this paper, the distributed and modularized control is proposed for a FMS based on the colored-timed Petri net (CTPN) model. The FMS system is converted into several modules corresponding to subsystems in the FMS. Each module is analyzed by the CTPN model, and then the complete system can be easily characterized by the CTPN model. It will be shown that each module preserves the boundedness and liveness. In addition, the boundedness and liveness of all modules imply the boundedness and liveness of the complete system. © 1993, Elsevier B.V.
