Abstract
A numerical approach is presented for efficiently evaluating the pressure fields radiated by a pulsed linear array transducer in the time domain. Instead of using Green's function, a wide-band time pulse, which is composed of two amplitude-modulated cosines multiplied by the difference between two traveling Heaviside step functions is employed to avoid complicated and time-consuming integration in the frequency domain. A numerical solution for the pressure distribution is obtained and compared with that obtained by the integration of a Gaussian pulse in the frequency domain. Increasing bandwidth causes smoothing of the grating lobes and side lobes, increases the width of the main lobe, and avoids split energy distribution along the axial direction. Finally, for numerical efficiency, we present the first quantitative evaluations of the lateral resolution, contrast resolution and uniformity of the array transducer for various bandwidths.
