Abstract
In this article, we prepare the samples of Y1-xCaxMn2O5 ( x = 0 and 0.05) to study the effect of Ca-doping on magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate a pure orthorhombic structure with space group Pbam for samples of x = 0 and 0.05. Based on the data of temperature-dependent magnetization M ( T ), the Néel temperature around 45 K is observed in both samples. The field-cooled and zero-field-cooled M ( T ) show a splitting around 45 K indicating a common feature of spin-canted state. It is found from the field dependent magnetization at 10 K that with changing Ca-content from 0 to 0.05, the magnetic moment increases from 0.028 to 0.083 μBohr per Mn-ion. In case of a strong coupling between magnetic moment and electric polarization, the Ca-doped sample may have a higher polarization/ferroelectric effect than pure YMn2O5 sample, which should be a great advantage for its future applications. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
