It targets ultra-low complexity, cost, and power for wireless connectivity among inexpensive, portable, and moving devices. In ZigBee, the IEEE 802.15.4 standard is utilized as the communication protocols of medium access control (MAC) layer and physical layer. The IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer provides a power-saving mechanism by setting the two system parameters, macBeaconOrder (BO) and macSuperFrameOrder (SO), to achieve the low dutycycle operation for the ZigBee network. In this paper, we analyze the power-saving mechanism in IEEE 802.15.4, and investigate the effects of the low-power attributes on the system performance. The performance evaluation is conducted through NS-2 simulation experiments under various BO and SO values and traffic loads. Based on the numerical results, some guidelines for the IEEE 802.15.4 low-power operation can be provided. Copyright 2007 ACM. |
