Abstract
Barium titanate (BaTiO3) specimens are sintered under different conditions to produce different microstructures. These microstructures are composed of fine grains or duplex grains or coarse (abnormal) grains. The mechanical properties are determined as a function of microstructure. Microcracks are generated together with the formation of abnormal grains. The presence of microcracks enhances the toughness of BaTiO3. The fracture of duplex-grained specimens originates from abnormal grains. The Weibull modulus of duplex-grained specimens is high for the size distribution of abnormal grains is narrow. There are only abnormal grains in the coarse-grained specimens. Microcracks are connected with one another in the specimens.
