Abstract
Wide-Area Measurement System (WAMS) application with the basis of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is one of the important techniques in smart grid field. Majority of traditional PMUs use GPS as time synchronization signals. However, if the single time synchronization signal is unstable, the accuracy of power system monitoring will be influenced. To elevate the stability and reliability for the time synchronization signals in PMU, dual time synchronization signals: GPS and IEEE Standard 1588v2 are applied in this study to decrease the over-dependence on GPS and establish autonomous time synchronization system with IEEE Standard 1588v2. Embedded system makes the Micro Phasor Measurement Unit μPMU) becomes possible since the volume of μPMU is small and easy to be installed. Also, μPMU can obtain power source and signal resource directly from domestic power source (AC 110V) without using power substation. In the future, renewable energy system will gradually be introduced in power system and many and many relatively small-scale renewable energy systems will be added in the power system of distribution level. To make the measurement for the electricity outputs of renewable energy systems and related parameters become easier, the development of μPMU plays an important role. In this study, communication protocol is embedded in μPMU to provide μPMU with information communication abilities for applying the distributed μPMU calculation in more application fields of smart grid measurement. © 2016 IEEE.
