Abstract
In this chapter, we will focus on issues related to homeless psychiatric patients in Asia, especially in Taiwan. People who are homeless and have a history of mental illness often have characteristics such as inaccessibility to health care, family disruption, environmental deprivation, and unmet mental health needs. Treatment and management of this atypical population is a great challenge for clinical practice. There will be a brief section reviewing prevalence of mental illnesses among homeless people in different Asian countries, and the characteristics of these patients. Then we move on to illustrate the relationship between homelessness and mental illness. In the final part of this chapter, we will explore the issues related to difficulties in treating patients that are homeless and their barriers to mental health care. Several novel community psychiatric service models in Taiwan and other nations of Asia will also be introduced. ? 2014 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
