With the aim of endorsing the use of this ultrasonic method in routine clinical practice, we conducted a series of studies to test the reliability of repetitive measurements of IMT in the CCA. Materials and Methods: As a part of the Chin-Shan Community Cardiovascular (CCC) Study, the inter-observer (n = 24) and intra-observer (n = 21) variabilities of maximal IMT in the distal CCA, 0-2 cm proximal to the carotid bifurcation, were assessed using high-resolution B-mode ultrasound. Intra-class correlation reliability was used to test the variability and reproducibility of the IMT measurements. Results: The inter-observer and intra-observer reliabilities ranged from good to excellent. The inter-observer correlation coefficients were 0.80-0.93 for the right side CCA and 0.84-0.87 for the left side CCA. The intra-observer correlation coefficients were 0.71-0.90 for the right side CCA and 0.66-0.73 for the left side CCA. The mixed model testing random measurement effects demonstrated that there was no significant variation by checking measurement differences between the two sides of the carotid artery, between the two locations of the CCA and between observers. Conclusion: High- resolution B-mode ultrasound is a highly reliable tool for the measurement of maximal IMT in the CCA and can be utilized as an effective followup study to predict atherosclerosis. |
