Abstract
Common carotid artery dissection following aortic arch dissection, although common at autopsy, is rarely reported. Using duplex ultrasonography facilitated by color Doppler, we report three patients who had common carotid artery dissection. One patient had acute hemiparesis and aphasia, while the other two patients did not have focal neurologic deficit. In contrast to the invasive procedure and easily missed diagnosis of the aortic angiography, duplex ultrasonography affords a non-invasive and immediate technique in the detection of common carotid artery dissection. Color Doppler may provide further information about the complex focal hemodynamics in common carotid artery dissection.
