Abstract
(See the Major Article by Doyle et al on pages e2164�V71.) Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains a major health problem for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is estimated that 2.3 million people are living with both HCV and HIV worldwide. People living with HIV are 6 times more likely to have HCV infection than those without [1]. Compared with the prevalence rate of HCV coinfection (2.4%) in the general population living with HIV, the rates are higher among bisexual men (4.0%), men who have sex with men (MSM; 6.4%), and people who inject drugs (PWIDs; 82.4%). Coinfection with HIV/HCV is known to accelerate the progression of hepatic fibrosis, which frequently results in liver-related morbidity and mortality, regardless of the use of antiretroviral therapy for HIV [2�V4].
