Abstract
A mathematical theory of automatic design of fixtures for general prismatic parts has been developed using screw theory and statics. The following functions of fixtures are analyzed: resting equilibrium, deterministic locating, clamping equilibrium and total constraint. The synthesis of fixtures is approached by decomposing the problem into two nearly decomposable subproblems. The subproblems are dealt with in an algebraic reasoning space taking into consideration their interactions. By this theory, locating points and clamping points and forces are generated automatically for any polygon support.
