Abstract
An analysis of 7 patients who underwent modified distal splenorenal shunt from Oct. 1982 to Apr. 1984 shows that there were no surgical mortality and morbidity were low. One shunt thrombosed and another shunt was stenotic. Both cases had recurrent varices without bleeding. In the remaining 5 cases, long term shunt patency was verified and varices diminished. Hepatic encephalopathy annoyed only one case whose liver function was poor and mild encephalopathy was noted preoperatively Liver function tests didn't deteriorate during the period of postoperative observation but hypersplenism was not significantly ameliorated in our series. It is concluded that distal splenorenal shunt is a safe and effective surgical procedure for treatment of esophageal variceal bleeding, especially with some experience.
