Abstract
Municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment offers an opportunity towards enhancing energy security. As a result, over the past few decades, research in this area has become more popular. This path seems to likely reshape the direction of environment and energy management in the future. Waste-to-Energy (WtE) is a promising energy alternative for future society as the projected 2.0 billion tons of MSW are equivalent to 2.247 quadrillion kJ of energy. Studies showed that combustible fraction of the daily 1155 tons of MSW can generate approximately 27.18 MW of energy, enough to power nearly 5,00,000 homes on a monthly basis at an average consumption of 500 W. Bibliometric analysis conducted also highlight the successive international cooperation among nations worldwide, trends and features of MSW treatment-based research. The review thereby puts forward a complete understanding of available WtE technologies and current scenario for sustainable MSW management as a major development opportunity on global scale. This opportunity depends on the achievements and identifying gaps while understanding the paradigm shift. It still remains a significant challenge to find the right WtE technology for energy recovery.
