Abstract
The advantages of augmented reality (AR) technology have been recognized across multiple industries, including the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) field. However, previous research on AR applications in the AEC industry is still limited and scattered. In particular, more studies have shown successful implementation during the design phase compared to the construction phase. The main reason that hinders practical applications during construction is the need for methods that break down the BIM model for AR with consideration of the schedule. The schedule contains information such as building sequences, construction methods, working areas, and work packages, which are significant for construction monitoring tasks with AR. Additionally, the complexity of BIM models hampered AR devices’ smooth performance. In this research, we developed a schedule-driven framework for construction monitoring tasks with AR that considers the semantic information in BIM and the schedule. This research analyzed construction monitoring tasks that can be done through AR and created the requirements to break down the BIM model based on the system, sequences, and work areas extracted automatically from the schedule. The preliminary results show that the framework can successfully break down BIM models into meaningful sections for AR-based construction monitoring tasks. The framework has been tested by construction professionals in two case studies.
