Abstract
NiMoO4 synthesized by a hydrothermal method on carbon paper (CP) is used as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Low-pressure plasma treatment is employed to bombard the material surface with reactive ions to create active sites, thereby enhancing the catalytic effect and increasing the electrochemical active surface area. The NiMoO4/CP treated with low-pressure plasma shows increased Ni2+ and Mo4+ ions and oxygen vacancies on its surface under X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, a lower overpotential (289.3 mV at 10 mA/cm2), and a lower charge transfer resistance (3.54 Ω). This NiMoO4/CP can potentially be used as a transition metal oxide HER catalyst material to replace noble metals to achieve environmental friendliness and cost reduction.
