Abstract
A compact low-profile on-body antenna with dual 2.4 and 5.7 GHz at the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band resonances is proposed for wide ISM applications. The antenna is formed by metals of a radiating U-shape patch, a parasitic U-shape patch, and two shorted pins. It has a small size of 8× 22× 1.6 mm with impedance frequency bandwidths of 2.41-2.46 and 5.70-5.82 GHz, respectively. The radiation patterns are unidirectional, with gains of -2.0 and -2.15 dBi at 2.45 and 5.75 GHz, respectively. The antenna radiation characteristics are numerically simulated by placing it on a human equivalent model with three layers of skin, fat, and muscle. The antenna is prototyped for measurement to verify the simulated results, where the measurement is performed by using a piece of pork belly to resemble the scenario on a human body. The specific absorption rate (SAR) is further analyzed in both simulation and measurement. The results show that the proposed antenna is well suited to a short-range on-body wireless communication system.
