Abstract
As portable and wearable devices keep shrinking, high power density has become a key focus in today's DC-to-DC converter design. The dual-path configuration emerges as a solution, reducing current stress and ripple on the inductor to achieve improved power density through the use of smaller inductors. However, in many dual-path designs, efficiency at light loads often suffers due to challenges in implementing zero current detection (ZCD). This is because the sensing switch contains both inductor and flying capacitor current. To address this issue, this paper introduces a novel hybrid converter architecture that inherits the advantages of dual-path converters while enabling discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) compatibility with ZCD. This ZCD implementation only requires sensing of the inductor current, similar to conventional buck converters. Moreover, the proposed converter resolves the slow load transient response issue experienced by dual-path converters, which is often limited by the slew rate of the inductor current.
