Abstract
This study develops an experimental methodology for investigating the hydrodynamic derivatives of a semi-submersible floating platform with a polygonal geometric configuration, particularly emphasizing viscous damping. The platform, named TaidaFloat, was designed by the National Taiwan University team for a 5 MW wind turbine. To analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of this unconventional design, a 1:100 scale floater model was tested through free decay tests in the vertical plane and captive harmonic tests in the horizontal plane. The experimental results provide reliable data on added mass, inertia, and both linear and quadratic damping coefficients across all six degrees of freedom including coupling terms. In particular, horizontal motions exhibit strong amplitude- and frequency-dependent damping behaviors, while added mass and inertia agree with potential flow solution.
