Abstract
Look-up table based (LUT) digital predistortion (DPD) is widely used for power amplifier (PA) linearization in mobile wireless devices thanks to its low computational complexity and low latency. This paper introduces a 2D-LUT-based DPD that not only alleviates the nonlinearity from the PA, but also mitigates the nonideality of the IQ modulators. The DPD algorithm is tested with a generic 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) signal operating at a 3.5-GHz carrier frequency, under which high IQ imperfections are present. The nonlinear PA used in the testing is operated over its 1-dB compression point, delivering an output power of 31.4 dBm. With the implementation of this DPD algorithm, issues such as IQ imbalance and IQ offset introduced by the IQ modulator can be effectively corrected. As a result, the linearity performance of the transmitter significantly improves and surpasses the stringent requirements of 5G applications.
