Abstract
The biological reactions between wear debris and periprosthetic tissue undermine the long-term clinical performance of orthopedic implants. In the present study, the wear debris was collected successfully from two yttria-doped zirconia (3 mol%Y2O3-doped ZrO2 and 1.5 mol% Y2O3-doped ZrO2) using a ball-on-disc self-mated wear technique. A relatively large amount, ∼100 mg each, of wear debris is then deposited into the epidural space at L3-L4 lumbar vertebrae of rabbit. The wear particles are fine in size (nm level) and angular or flaky in shape. These fine particles tend to form agglomerates (μm level) after the wear test; then to form clusters (100 μm level) in the epidural space. All rabbits show no adverse effect in a period of 13 weeks; the histological image detects no inflammatory response around neural tissue.
