Abstract
Chewing gum has been a ubiquitous habit in human civilization for millennia, offering stress relief and freshness. Its widespread popularity has made it one of the most popular confectionery products globally. However, most synthetic products are water-insoluble and non-biodegradable, resulting in a staggering 250 000 tons of annual waste that also contaminates oceans, land, and ecosystems. With forecasts predicting a rise to 1 million metric tons over the next five years, the need for sustainable solutions is pressing. In response to this issue, we introduce an innovative method involving the use of recycled chewing gum in a triboelectric nanogenerator (RCG-TENG). This device can capture mechanical energy and produce an open-circuit voltage of 167 V for a device measuring 3 × 3 cm2, a short-circuit current of 6.9 µA, and a peak power density of 35.55 µW cm−2. The RCG-TENG shows potential for eco-friendly energy harvesting and industrial applications when integrated into a self-powered electroplating system. With the RCG-TENG, we achieved high-quality copper plating on top of aluminum within a short period of time using chewing gum as a triboelectric material. This research addresses microplastic pollution by converting chewing gum waste, promotes sustainable energy innovations, and aids in meeting SDG objectives, thereby promoting a more sustainable and circular economy.
