Professor Hung-Yuan Li is currently professor of Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taiwan and attending physician of the Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan. He received his medical degree from Medical College, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and had his resident training for internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism in National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan. He received Master and Ph.D. degree in Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, Medical College, National Taiwan University, Taiwan.

Professor Li was deputy secretary-general of Diabetes Association of R.O.C (DAROC) from 2007 to 2019. Since 2019, he has been elected to be a member of executive board of DAROC. He participates in various activities held by DAROC, including drafting of the Taiwan Declaration on Diabetes, production of a song for diabetes, "a better way", and calling for articles for people with diabetes. He also helps the writing and editing of several clinical guidelines and chapters in books published by DAROC and National Taiwan University Hospital. Currently, Professor Li has been the editor-in-chief of Formosan Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the assistant editor of Journal of Diabetes Investigation, the official journal of DAROC and Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD), respectively. Since Oct 2021, he is the CEO of Formosan Diabetes Care Foundation, which focuses on the public education and awareness of diabetes.

In research, Professor Li is interested in epidemiology and translational research of diabetes. He has established a large community-based cohort to publish approximately 30 papers about the screening and diagnosis, risk factors, pathogenesis, and biomarkers of diabetes. The paper about screening of diabetes have been adopted in the guidelines of DAROC. Professor Li has established cell and animal models of obesity, diabetes and atherosclerosis and devoted himself in translational researches of several potential targets, including vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1), fibrinogen-like protein 1, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL6. He has demonstrated that VAP-1 is a biomarker to predict diabetic complications and a therapeutic target of atherosclerosis. For these studies of VAP-1, he received Professor Fang-Wu Chen Outstanding Research Award, DAROC and Endocrine society of R.O.C. In recent years, metabolic disorders during pregnancy have become his new research interest. He established several gestational cohorts to study the diagnosis, risk factors and pathogenesis of gestational diabetes and gestational dyslipidemia. For these, he has been invited to write review articles about gestational diabetes. In 2023, he received Masato Kasuga Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement of the AASD. Professor Li has published 20 book chapters and 142 papers, including some highly-cited papers in high-impact journals such as Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, International Journal of Obesity, FASEB Journal, Obesity and Translational Research.
