Until today, contemporary Japanese still contain much Chinese characters, known as Kanji. Kanji structurally resemble Chinese characters and their meanings are also similar. The similarities between Chinese characters and Kanji are quite contributive in helping Japanese people in learning Chinese. Other than borrowing Chinese characters, Japanese also introduce and modify Chinese pronunciation to fit into their Japanese language system. The actual pronunciation of Kanji is different from the pronunciation of Chinese characters, however, there is still some systemic regularity in their phonetics. My thesis is to use the Kanji that pronounced like Chinese from “The list of commonly used Kanji” as my primary materials, and then use these Kanji to compare with contemporary Chinese pronunciation so correlation between the two could be examined. After a correlation is being established, I further investigate the effects of Kanji pronunciation to the learning of Chinese by Japanese students. Finally, a method of effectively utilizing Kanji pronunciation as a teaching aid to teach Japanese students Chinese is established. |
