In this academic attempt, the formation and various characteristics of the thought of Xun Zi 荀子 (ca. 316-235 BC) and the Lüshi chunqiu 呂氏春秋 (ca. 239 BC) will be extensively examined. They were two of the three most prominent political treatises of that period (the third one is the Hanfeizi), which systematized preceding pre-Qin socio-political theories. Also, they were the moulder of two lines of the theory of statecraft in early China, which functioned as profoundly essential yet universally practical governing techniques throughout the Former Han dynasty. This research attempts to articulate the systematic aspect in the thought of the Lüshi chunqiu, and by means of focusing its affinity to the thought of Xun Zi, argues that the Jixia scholarly tradition was the common source for the thought of Lüshi chunqiu and Xun Zi. |
