However, conventional antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) usually requires 2-3 days, which may increase the mortality of seriously infected patients. We proposed a microfluidic microwell device integrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for rapid AST. By confining bacteria in the microwell, the effective bacteria concentration can increase up to 107-fold, which can eliminate prolonged cultivation time in conventional AST. For bacteria detection, SERS was integrated in the system to detect the Raman signal of secreted bacteria metabolites, which can be used for bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility test. In summary, our microfluidic microwell device integrating SERS platform enables a rapid and label-free bacteria identification, which can be potentially used for real-Time and rapid diagnosis of bacterial infectious diseases. ? 2019 IEEE. |
