Different from the orthodox methodology adopted in the ethnic studies in Taiwan, this project focuses on the native Taiwanese’s experience in relation to ethnic movements developed after the end of 1970s. Despite the fact that the native Taiwanese had been actively involved in the ethnic movements, their ethnicity claim seems marginalized in the Taiwan’s discourses of ethnicity (and nationalism) politically and academically. Michel Foucault’s genealogical analysis suggests us to look at ‘emergence’ and ‘descent’ of historical experiences for the purpose of revealing ‘accidents’ and ‘errors’ occurred during the process of constitution of ethnicity. In examining the historical experiences of Taiwanese ethnic movement, this project gives attention to accidents and errors which are excluded in the mainstream of Taiwanese ethnicity, yet which are particularly related to the experiences of the native Taiwanese ethnicity. The research result discusses the causes that rupture and disrupt the contemporary discourse on nationalism and ethnicity in Taiwan. |
